Boating That Is Safe!

ASPS members know that safety comes first on the water. Certain ASPS members are certified to perform Coast Guard–authorized vessel safety examinations. ASPS Vessel Safety Examiners are trained to ensure that all legally required and Coast Guard-recommended safety equipment is on board, accessible and functional, and that the boat’s mechanical systems operate in a safe manner. These inspections are performed free of charge at the request of the boat owner.

ASPS offers basic boating safety courses to the public. These courses, approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), provide the basics in safe boating operation. The courses are offered in a variety of formats and locations throughout the year.

In conjunction with the Coast Guard Auxiliary and TowBoatUS, ASPS has a key role in ensuring that the annual Lake Lanier Parade of Lights is a safe and well-managed event to the public and there is no age limit for participants. USPS squadrons have offered these courses for over half a century and have educated more than 3 million boaters to date. Successfully completing a USPS boating safety course meets the educational requirements for boat operation in all states and is a requirement for squadron membership.
